Cowdenbeath shocked local rivals Raith Rovers in the first round of the Alba Challenge Cup today. John Armstrong was the hero with the goal in the second half. The Cowden 11 saw many new faces from the team which had secured promotion at Brechin all those months ago.
In an even first half the best chance fell Cowdens way - in fact Cowden scored a 'Lampard goal' with the ball clearly crossing the line but the goal not being awarded due to the keepers body shielding the ball from the linesmans view.
In the second half it was Cowden who were on top - Linton fired over before Mackenzie had a low shot tipped wide for a corner. From the corner, Armstrong headered towards goal. Blocked by a defender and after a bit of pin-ball the ball fell back to the centre half to lash home the only goal of the game.
Davidson should have equalised for Raith when his free header somehow went wide when it seemed easier to score.
In the next round Cowden will be away to 2nd division side Ayr United.
