Cowdenbeath struggled to a 3-3 draw against play-off rivals Brechin City at Glebe Park on Tuesday. Amazingly Cowden had taken a 3-0 lead after only 29 minutes but somehow conspired to drop 2 vital points and all but kill off any hopes of winning the league.
Cowden started well and took a deserved lead through Gareth Wardlaw - Paul McQuade crossing from the right and Wardlaw was on hand to tap home. A great start got better in no time at all - a corner was cleared to the edge of the box where Darren McGregor was lurking to drill a stunning volley low and into the back of the net.
The Cowden fans were delirious but things were about to get even better - McQuade again setting up Wardlaw who calmly slipped the ball past Nelson in the Brechin goal to make it 3-0 - after 29 minutes!
But the 2nd half was to be the opposite of the first. A hopeful cross into the box was missed by Joe Mbu and the ball fell to Rory McAllister - the top scorer in Scotland - who made no mistake firing in off the underside of the bar. Minutes later the same player scored again - in a replica off Wardlaws second goal.
Cowden were struggling but then out of nowhere Paul McQuade hit a stunning shot off the underside of the bar - hard to tell if the whole ball went over the line but the danger was cleared. Brechin broke up field and scored through Vallers - the big man calmly charging through the static Cowden defence and firing home despite the best efforts of stand in left back Jay Stein.
This was not the end of the action though - McGregor twice had headers cleared off the line in an epic finish to the game. In the end though neither team will be too happy to have only gained a point from the game!
