Sad news has reached us of the death of popular former club physio
Jimmy Reekie last Sunday. Jimmy was for so long a fixture at the club
and is fondly remembered by the many players who he tended in his time
with us including Craig Levein.
It was Andy Matthew who first appointed Jimmy as physio in the late
1960s in order to free up Watty Glancy to concentrate on his training
role. Jimmy had at one time been a junior referee after being prompted
to take up the whistle by his cousin Bill Foster who was later club
secretary at Cowdenbeath. Jimmy obtained his physio qualifications as
his refereeing career came to its close. After an initial spell with
Cowden he left for a time before returning in 1973. He was then to
serve the club faithfully for almost 20 years more. Jimmy was physio
for 12 different Cowden managers in his time at the club and latterly
acted as kitman after John Brownlie took charge.
Jim famously was given a mention in Pat Stanton's biography when the
ex-Scotland star and Cowden manager recalled a game when he was looking for Jimmy to treat a player on the park. He was found on the terrace
after being asked by the police to give two fans that had been fighting
some treatment. Jimmy also was physio for the Falkirk and Glasgow
Rangers basketball teams and the Fife 49ers American Football team.
Jim retired from his position as reserve team trainer at Central Park
late in 1992 when his doctor suggested he take things a bit easier.
His waygoing was a great loss to the club. Many came and went but
Jimmy was a fixture at Cowdenbeath for so many years. This great
enthusiast was the type of character that Cowden could always depend
on.
Our thoughts are with this family and friends at this sad time.
